Guide
How to Meditate for 15 Minutes
A plain guide to sitting for a quarter of an hour, without jargon and without an app talking over you.
Set up
Sit on a chair or cushion with your back unsupported but upright, hands anywhere comfortable, eyes closed or lowered. Start the timer, put the phone face down and out of reach, and do not look at it again.
Fifteen minutes is a reasonable step up once ten feels manageable. If you are new to this, start at five and add a few minutes each week.
What to actually do
Put attention on the breath where you feel it most clearly: the nose, the chest or the belly. Stay with one full in-breath and one full out-breath. When you notice you have wandered, return.
That is the entire instruction. There is no state to reach and nothing to make happen. The noticing and returning is the practice, not an interruption to it.
The middle is the hard part
Around minute six, restlessness usually arrives, along with a strong sense that this was a waste of time. It passes. Sitting through it without negotiating is where most of the benefit is.
If the mind is very busy, count breaths to ten and start again at one. It gives attention something to hold without turning into a task.
Ending well
When the sound comes, do not leap up. Sit for another thirty seconds, open your eyes and notice the room before moving. The transition is part of it.
Do not judge the session by how calm it felt. A restless fifteen minutes you sat through counts exactly as much as a peaceful one.

Questions people ask
Is 15 minutes of meditation enough?
Yes. Most teachers suggest ten to twenty minutes daily, and consistency at fifteen minutes matters far more than occasional longer sittings.
What if I fall asleep?
Sit more upright, open your eyes slightly, or practise earlier in the day. Falling asleep usually means tiredness rather than a failure of technique.
Run it with a timer
This is the writing; the countdown is next door. Use the 15 minute meditation timer.
